British oil producer Afren has had the deadline for Nigeria's Seplat Petroleum Development Co to make a firm takeover offer or walk away extended.

Seplat now has time until 5pm on February 13 to make up its mind.

A previous deadline was due to end on Saturday.

Afren said in December it had received a preliminary approach from Seplat.

The companies received a first deadline extension on January 19.

The London-listed company, which has its main producing assets are in Nigeria, has been struggling with looming debt payments and tumbling oil prices.
