SHOPPERS in Alva will be the first in Scotland to use The Co-operative Food's new mobile "pop-up" shop, which will provide a temporary replacement while the Clackmannanshire town's main store is closed for a £394,000 refurbishment.

The "pop-up" store's first appearance was in Cropwell Bishop, in Nottinghamshire, and since then it has been used in two locations in Wiltshire, and most recently in Esh Winning, in County Durham.

It will come into action for the first time in Scotland when the Stirling Street store in Alva closes for around 10 days, from Sunday evening.

The new mobile kiosk, measuring four metres by 2.3 metres, will stock 120 of the community retailer's most popular products, and ensure a continuous service for customers.

Steve Murrells, chief executive of The Co-operative's retail division, said: "Like the old-style grocery vans, the 'pop-up' kiosks are mobile, but they are so well designed they can provide an excellent shopping experience for communities, which otherwise may be without convenience store shopping while we improve a store."

David Mcleod, manager of the Alva store, said: "It is fantastic that we're able to remain open."

The pop-up shop, located in the car park to the rear of the store, will be open from 7am until 6pm each day. It will remain in place until the new-look Co-operative Food store in Alva opens on Thursday November 6.
