Given the problems with the wet weather this summer, dairy farmers have been seeking advice on whether they can use silage almost immediately after it has been made.

Scottish Agricultural College (SAC) consultant Dr Basil Lowman said: "If silage is exposed to air before the fermentation process has finished, there will be insufficient acid produced to protect it against moulds and secondary fermentation, etc.
