A STUNNED audience at the Borderway Mart in ­Carlisle witnessed the ­January 2013-born pedigree Limousin maiden heifer, Glenrock Illusion, go under the hammer for 125,000 guineas setting a new world record for the breed.

The £131,250 price tag on Friday beat the £126,000 previous best, which was set by a Limousin bull in 2012.

It is also an all-breeds UK and European record for a bovine animal.

Glenrock Illusion was part of the Glenrock Limousin Herd which was being sold on behalf of Scottish-based farmers Mr and Mrs Stephen Illingworth.

They are based at Howgillside, Eaglesfield, Lockerbie in Dumfriesshire.

Glenrock Illusion was bought by Mike and Melanie Alford, Foxhill Farm, Blackborough, Cullompton, Devon.

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd also sold 47 Scotch mule gimmers in Newton Stewart on Friday to a top of £144 and an average of £122.45 (+£1.50 on the year), while 113 Scotch mule ewe lambs peaked at £115 and levelled at £92.75 (-£3.45).

There were also 1,498 store lambs and feeding sheep forward.

Top prices and averages for lambs: Suffolks to £69.20 and averaged £62.10 for 492 (+£1.56); Texels £63.50 and £58.45 for 765 (+5p); Mules £55 and £49.93 for 143 (-87p); Cheviots £56.50 and £52.16 for 98 (+56p).

Wallets marts had 3261 Scotch mule gimmers forward at their annual sale in Castle Douglas on Saturday when the championship was awarded to a pen off East Dykes that went on to sell for £200 apiece.

The final average there levelled at £147.59 (+£12 on the year).

The firm went on to sell 8,635 Scotch Mule ewe lambs at the same venue yesterday with a top of £148 for the champion pen shown by Culdoach.

This time the final average levelled at £104.31 (+67p on the year).

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 17 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 222.5p per kilogramme and an average of 189.5p (-10.9p on the week).

Meanwhile, the four prime bullocks on sale peaked at 204.5p and levelled at 187.7p (-11.5p).

Forty-nine prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 223.5p and averaged 187.3p (+4.5p), while the 33 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 176.5p and levelled at 159.7p (+17.3p).

In the rough ring, 63 beef cows averaged 127.8p (-4.2p) and 92 dairy cows levelled at 97.2p (+8.8p).

The firm also sold 2678 prime lambs to a top of £103.80 per head and 260p per kg to average 168.6p (-0.7p).

The 321 cast sheep forward saw ewes sell to £105.50 for Texels and £65.50 for Hill Cheviots.

John Swan Ltd sold 31 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to a top of 237p and an average of 217p (no change).

Meanwhile the 36 prime bullocks peaked at 244p and levelled at 209.4p (+3.1p).

In the rough ring 25 beef-type cattle averaged 119.4p (-4.8p).

The firm also sold 2,373 prime lambs to a top of £100 and 203p to average 163.8p (+0.5p).

The 1,287 cast sheep forward saw ewes sell to £107 for Texels and £59 to average £53.14 overall.

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 2350 prime lambs at Ayr yesterday to a top of £90 and 188.6p to average 159.1p (+2.1p).

There were also 1,001 cast sheep forward when ewes sold to £120 for a pen of Texels and £78 for Blackfaces.

Lawrie & Symington sold 18 prime heifers in Lanark yesterday to a top of 243p and an average of 209.1p (-3.1p).

Meanwhile the 20 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 228p and levelled at 200.6p (-1.1p).

Twelve prime, B&W bullocks sold to 164.5p and averaged 145.4p (+2.1p).

In the rough ring, 11 beef cows averaged 118p (-9p) and 20 dairy cows levelled at 74p (-10p).

There were also 2,785 prime lambs forward that sold to £89.50 and 207p to average 164.8p (+1.3p).
