United Auctions had 14,636 North Country Cheviot lambs forward at their first sale in Lairg on Tuesday.

Top draw wether lambs maintained last year's prices while smaller, longer keep types met a much increased trade. Wethers sold to a top of £67.50 and averaged £55.41 (+£2.17 on the year), while ewe lambs peaked at £148 and levelled at £65.50 (+£7.54).

The firm went on to sell 257 store heifers at Stirling on Wednesday to a top of 250p per kg and an average of 212.1p (+4.8p on the week), while 361 store, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 253.2p and levelled at 215.7p (+1.2p); and 127 store, B&W bullocks sold to 167.9p and averaged 144.3p (-13.6p), while 23 store bulls peaked at 227p and levelled at 188.4p. In the rough ring 138 cows averaged 113.5p.

The firm also had 6331 store lambs forward. Top prices and averages: Suffolks to £65.50 and averaged £59.68 (-38p on the week); Texels £72 and £59.94 (-£1.85); Mules £59.50 and £53.59 (-74p); Blackfaces £49.50 and £40 (+72p); Beltex £62 and £60.33 (+19p); Cheviots £56.50 and £51.10 (+40p).

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 174 store heifers at Ayr yesterday to a top of £1290 per head and 231.7p per kg to average £845.92 and 204.4p, while 198 store, beef-bred bullocks peaked at £1270 and 253.7p to level at £881.53 and 210.65p. Thirty store, B&W bullocks sold to £840 and 175p to average £590.33 and 144.2p.

The firm had 804 store lambs forward at their opening sale of the season that averaged £58.70 overall (+£3.80 on the year). Top prices and averages: Texels £62.80 and £60.14; Suffolks £63 and £59.72; Mules £57 and £56.14; Blackfaces £58 and £48.18.
