JUST when you think matters could not possibly get any worse, up come "events" to prove you wrong.

That is what has happened in the last week or so for both the banking sector and the outlook for the UK and Scottish economies.

Allow me to get the banking sector out of the way first. Here I must admit to having spent 12 years as group chief economist at RBS, albeit at a time – I retired in 2005 – when customers still seemed to matter as much, if not more than, bonuses.
