ELAND Oil & Gas has recruited a production specialist to its board as the company looks to raise output in Nigeria.

The Aberdeen-based company said it has appointed Richard Norris as a non-executive director to replace Andrew Bartlett on the board.

Mr Norris will represent Helios Natural Resources, which is a significant shareholder in Eland.

The 48-year-old brings over 25 years of experience of the oil and gas industry to Eland.

A petroleum engineer by training, Mr Norris has worked for exploration and production companies such as Total and Tunisia-focused Candax Energy. He also worked for the French bank BNP Paribas.

Aim-listed Eland announced his appointment a week after it said that George Maxwell had succeeded Les Blair as chief executive.

Mr Blair stepped down from the board to become Strategic Advisor to the company. He reports to Mr Maxwell, who had been chief financial officer.

Louis Castro, who had been a non-executive director of Eland, became chief financial officer.

Earlier this month, Eland Oil & Gas restarted production from the Opuama field onshore Niegria, where it has been hampered by thefts of crude oil.

In August, Eland agreed to acquire a 40 per cent stake in the onshore Ubima field for up to $10m.

Eland thanked Mr Bartlett for his work and contribution to the company since 2012 and wished him well in his future endeavours.
