Why is doing the right thing so hard for our leaders to do?

With the radio pressed to my ear, I could just make out the music of Sting and Elton John in Wembley stadium competing with the sounds of hundreds of Ethiopian refugees in the camp in Somalia where I was working.

This was July 1985 and the event was, of course, the legendary Live Aid concert. I recall feeling at the time how remote the concert seemed from the reality of people’s lives in what was then a moderately peaceful Mogadishu.
