IT is much harder than it once was to make crime pay in Scotland.
A combination of the Proceeds of Crime Act, tighter regulation of industries traditionally susceptible to criminal infiltration such as security, and more effective policing, has led to millions of pounds worth of dishonest earnings being confiscated from criminal gangs. Last weekend, The Herald reported that £100million has been denied to organised crime in the past three years thanks to the police drilling down into financial records and working more closely with Revenue and Customs and the Crown Office.
