At the end of a case as shocking as that of the 13-year-old who stabbed his foster carer to death, one question is inevitable: what action can be taken to prevent such a terrible event happening again?
The judge in the case, Lord Pentland, said no sentence he could impose would put right the appalling consequences of what happened, but the death of a young woman who opened her home to help children in need should make us question whether the foster care system is working as well as it can.
