For observers of Rangers, baffling twists have long been part of the story of the club's protracted decline.

The confusing picture regarding the club's manager Ally McCoist is yet another one.

But for spectators and followers, Mr McCoist's current status now he has resigned is alarming. After taking a 50% pay cut earlier in the year, the manager's contract ensures he will now receive his full salary again until the end of his 12 month notice period.

While this may be partly contractual, it is also, surely about public relations. Mr McCoist, the club's most prolific ever scorer remains a hero to fans. Despite his limited managerial record many find it hard to blame him for the team's plight.

However if he is seen to be helping put Rangers' financial future at risk, that could strengthen the board's hand. It was notable how publicly they announced his salary will now be £750,000.

We know the club needs in the region of £8m to keep going beyond the end of the year. Bizarrely the only man likely to help plug that gap, Mike Ashley, was yesterday charged, along with Rangers, with rule-breaking over his involvement in both the Glasgow club and Newcastle FC.

Mr McCoist meanwhile is in an extraordinary position. It is a rare underperforming employee who manages to quit and double his salary at the same time.
