Perhaps as many as a billion people worldwide watched the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games.

For the time being, the gaze of the international community is distracted from the plight of two million people who live in the Syrian city of Aleppo. Right now they have more pressing issues to contend with than games – such as trying to survive the onslaught of tanks, warplanes and soldiers of president Bashar al-Assad's dictatorial regime.
