In a world where most people spend their working week in dull suiting and their weekends in laid-back jeans and t-shirts, thank heavens for weddings and formal events that require us to dress up in our Sunday best.

I suppose the days of actually wearing your Sunday best on a Sunday are pretty much gone, as most of us only don cocktail dresses and formal suits when attending a big event.

Dressing up for a wedding can be an expensive business once you count the dress, shoes and assorted make-up items that are required to create the overall look.

Men, on the other hand, have it a lot easier – they can wear the same suit to multiple events and make it look different by simply changing the tie.

However, as pictures of you will inevitably end up plastered all over Facebook after the event, it is definitely worth making the effort. For this same reason, it is advisable not to wear the same thing twice. Thanks to Facebook we have to behave like celebrities and consign an item to the back of our wardrobes after only one wear.

Although I must confess I love being forced to buy a new outfit each time I go to a wedding. I am a big fan of event dressing as it allows us to indulge our dramatic side. That oversized hat that would make you look a bit much in any other setting, is ultra chic when worn to a summer wedding. Likewise, when else could you get away with head-to-toe sequins and full-length gowns than at a grand ball?

Formal events allow us to escape our day-to-day look and life, lose our inhibitions and immerse ourselves in a world of old-school glamour. And with five weddings to attend this year, I will have plenty opportunity to do just that.
