I know, I know, the weather's been appalling for most of the summer, and now we're facing a winter of discontent fuelled by inadequate flood defences and reduced potato supplies, all thanks to the interminable rain.

But come what may, I will remember my trip to rural Perthshire earlier this week, when it seemed that Scotland was truly in its element – a fairy-tale impression first conveyed by a couple of roe deer bounding daintily through the rain-misted pine forest at Meikleour.
