The advert for the appointment of Chair to the new Scottish Police Authority makes interesting reading (Appointments, The Herald, July 13).

It seeks someone who will help build "a safer and stronger Scotland" and will be "appointed on merit, committed to diversity and equality". Previously, the chair of Scotland's police boards were selected by the democratically accountable councillors nominated thereto by their respective unitary councils.
