I AM increasingly amused at the lengths to which we, as a society, go to re-invent the wheel.

Police Scotland's latest initiative on driver behaviour is a classic example ("Police target bad drivers in 'stop and warn' clampdown", The Herald, October 20).

In the 1960s and beyond, the former Renfrew and Bute Constabulary had a road safety campaign called "care more". The principle was that a senior, very experienced road patrol officer in an unmarked car observed driver behaviour. Should a driver be seen to be driving other than to a reasonable standard he/she was stopped, advised about how to improve and offered a place on a "better driving course". The uptake was almost 100 per cent. On the other hand, if a driver was seen to be driving with consideration for other road users he/she was stopped, congratulated and given a small reward. This was very well received.

What happened to this excellent scheme - axed in the Strathclyde cutbacks? Will we ever learn?
