I am unable to speak for Linda Fabiani's "selective amnesia" on the perfidy of SNP MPs who, in 1979, apparently single-handedly, passed us over, in a nicely wrapped parcel to the not-so-tender mercies of Margaret Thatcher et al (Not the SNP's full Tory story, Letters, August 6).
I am, however puzzled as to why Gordon Taylor appears to have forgotten that the by-then minority Labour government had lost the support of its loose coalition of allies, the Lib-Lab pact being dead in the water, with the Liberals having already given notice of their desire for a General Election and of their support for any no-confidence vote. You may indeed be entitled to suggest, as James Callaghan did, that the then-SNP MPs were turkeys voting for an early Christmas, but please don't insult our intelligence by implying that, had it not been for the motion of no confidence, lost by one vote, Labour would have swept back in and saved the day.
