YOUR front page report ("Drink-driving offences plummet", The Herald, May 30) is, no doubt, an accurate summary of the effect the new law has had on such offences.

However, to hail the legislation as effective on the basis of these statistics is surely missing the point.

I understood that the lower limit was introduced in order to reduce the number of injuries and deaths arising from road traffic accidents. I sincerely hope that this will be achieved, but until such time as the statistics support this, we should not "spin" the numbers to claim success before it is justified.
