THERE is a myth that we in the west do not support the Edinburgh festivals.

Having travelled back and forth a few times in the past two weeks to festival events I can see that this is apocryphal: late evening trains have been filled with returning crowds brandishing International Festival programmes as well as those from the Fringe and Tattoo. For the most part this travel has been reasonable and almost comfortable, although the electric three-car services to Helensburgh and all stops between there and the capital at about 10pm have been packed, with standing room only.
