As someone who suffered redundancy from the rail industry as an indirect consequence of the SNP Government's decision, on election in 2007, to abandon a new rail link under Edinburgh Airport, I am dismayed that further rail investment is now also being cut back by a second SNP administration to the extent, that even the short diversionary route off the Edinburgh- Glasgow main line through Falkirk Grahamston is apparently considered as superfluous to electrify.

I cannot believe the short-sighted approach taken in rail planning at a time when issues of train performance and delays are never far from news columns despite the outstanding success of recently- opened routes closed by Dr Beeching. Your report ("Train delays warning over funding cuts", The Herald, July 6), highlights concerns made by senior rail planners over performance risk which appear to be dismissed by a spokesman for Transport Scotland.
