About 40% of drivers who have amassed over 12 points on their driving licence escape a ban after pleading that it would cause exceptional hardship; so clearly the points system is not effective in discouraging speeding and promoting safer driving in a fair number of cases (Letters, July 11).

This amounts to around 10,000 drivers in the UK.

The speed limit on motorways should be increased to a realistic 80mph and any driver exceeding 100mph should have their vehicle confiscated and the proceeds used to benefit victims of road crime.
