I have some sympathy with the view of Dr Walter J MacCulloch that there is a need to reinforce the basics in our schools (Letters, July 9).
However such curricular areas as maths and English, to which he refers, have historically been challenged to find relevance and meaning in the context of the lives of contemporary young people.
The Commission for School Reform in Scotland, to which Dr MacCulloch alludes, states in its recently published interim report: "In the past Scottish schools have tended to undervalue vocational and technological education."
