MANY will empathise with the self-confessed boredom expressed by Sir Alex Ferguson ("Sir Alex admits: I'm bored", The Herald, April 24).

Others will be somewhat surprised that the former highly successful millionaire finds himself in a period of tedium.

Post-retirement people move on to involvement of extended family commitment, voluntary and recreational pursuits or alarmingly drift into the tedium of too much free time. Apparently, Sir Alex considers he is now in the latter category.

Considering his proven sporting record, his humble background and tribute to his parents, school teachers and others in the fashioning of his character, I am surprised that Sir Alex has not been approached, not least of all by his home city Glasgow, as to becoming the city's leading ambassador.

In such a fitting role Sir Alex would soon find his days once again filled with job satisfaction. The B-word and all its frustrations would soon fade into oblivion.
