It is true that sport is too far down the list when it comes it comes to priorities in state education and that the decline began with the teachers' industrial dispute in 1974, when they withdrew from voluntary supervisory and refereeing duties on Saturday mornings, and later under- funding ("Let's gear up for a sporting revolution", The Herald, August 7).
The enthusiasm over the success of the London Olympics is an opportunity to promote sport in schools but even if finance was made available I doubt if there would be much interest from teachers wanting to be involved.
