John JG McGill asks what independence means (Politics will bring down indy debate, Letters, July 15).

It means being in the same position as 99% of the other nations in the world, 200-plus of which have smaller populations than us.

It means not having to go cap-in-hand to London to ask for our share of the UK pot. It means us standing on our own two feet and not being invisible on the world stage. It means not being asked if you come from Scotland, England. It means taking back our coastline from the Crown Commisioners; taking back the area of North Sea Tony Blair gave to England; taking back revenue raised in Scotland for Scots; not paying £1 billion-plus towards the Olympics and then paying by ourselves for the Commonwealth Games.
