I AGREE with Ian Bell that the voting age should be reduced ("It's time to stop patronising and start trusting the young", The Herald, August 22).

The arguments against reducing it to 16 are exactly the same as those that were advanced against lowering it to 18 and for that matter they are also the same arguments that were used in places such as Denmark, which once had a much higher voting age, against reducing it to 21. What was a bad argument back then is still a bad argument now.
