Harry Reid thinks that same-sex marriage would undermine an institution but he fails to provide arguments to support this ("Why I see no need for same-sex marriage", The Herald, July 10).
He says: "Marriage is all about love, commitment and mutual support." These are also reasons to support equal marriage for couples who wish to enter that covenant regardless of their sexuality. It could be argued that society benefits from the stability which such committed relationships help to promote.
