I READ with interest your report of the SNP's proposals to scrap free carrier bags, giving the money raised to charity "(Bag tax plan for shoppers in Scotland", The Herald, June 25).

This may understandably provoke controversy. As Conservative enviroment spokesman Jamie McGregor pointed out: "People may feel that, after spending a significant amount of money on their weekly shop, this is just another expense".

However, a few high street stores have begun to impose charges, and on the whole it has proved successful. Shoppers have also been adapting of their own accord, paying more attention as to whether they use their own bags or not, and doing their bit to help our enviroment. Investing in a supermarket "bag for life" is well worth the money.
