The Torridon Hotel

What is it: The far west of Scotland is one of my favourite places and the beautiful Torridon Hotel, on the banks of Loch Torridon, came highly recommended. Formerly a grand Victorian shooting lodge, it's in one of the most impressive locations the Scottish Highlands has to offer.

Interesting fact: There is a great history attached to this venue with many stories to tell. Ada Lovelace, daughter of Lord Byron and a 19th century mathematician who is credited as being the world's first computer programmer, once lived here.

Verdict: Stunning location, luxurious interior ... and staff in the whisky bar really knew their stuff. The collection is big, with some unusual bottlings alongside well-known brands. I could have sat there all day, reading a good book and trying some amazing whiskies. I can't wait to go back.

Drink: In 2013, they were awarded gold status by the Whisky Magazine Awards, and were among the first 50 establishments to be awarded Best Whisky Bar in the World'status. So they must know what they are doing. With more than 350 to choose from I went for a Lagavulin 16-year-old for £7.

Food: The three-rosette Torridon Restaurant is proud to serve locally-sourced ingredients. This is not typical Highland hotel grub, it's Scottish fine dining at its best. The Torridon even has its own two-acre fruit and vegetable garden. Unfortunately I didn't get the chance the to sample the five-course menu but with dishes like Beinn Eighe venison with red cabbage, celeriac and bitter chocolate or Megrim Sole Murat artichoke with baby onion and lemon you now it's not going to disappoint.

Avoid if: You can't be bothered travelling across some of the most beautiful countryside you will ever see.

Perfect for: Staying for a couple of nights with your partner and enjoying some of the best Scottish service, food and drink around.
