Week five: basic maintenance, part three

Which gears to use and when can be confusing – is there a simple, fail-safe formula?
"This is something which comes with practice. For going up a hill you need the lowest gear: usually one of the smallest chain rings at the front and the largest cog at the back. If you are coming down a hill you want to do the opposite, so put it in the big chain ring at the front and try to find a slightly smaller cog at the back. If your chain set has three rings, the middle one is probably best for about town as it will give you a good range of gears on fairly flat terrain."
