ONCE again Scottish universities are in the spotlight over their failure to recruit sufficient numbers of students from deprived backgrounds.

The revelation that it will take 40 years to achieve parity in participation for the poorest in society has led to renewed criticism of the sector's inability to tackle an age-old problem.

NUS Scotland said yesterday that universities needed to do more to encourage talented pupils from deprived backgrounds through their doors.
