Staff at an outdoor education centre which was shut by its council owners on grounds of cost are celebrating its first school year back in business – and say it is well in the black.

The Ardroy Outdoor Education Centre at Lochgoilhead, Argyll, was closed by Fife Council this time last year. It was requiring a £290,000-a-year council subsidy to keep it open.

But retired Dunoon business executive and adviser George Bruce, backed by head of centre Phil Thompson, reopened it last November after successfully putting together a charitable trust.
