THE headteacher of one of Scotland's top private schools has stepped down after 39 years service.

Colin Mair retired from the High School of Glasgow on the last day of term after eleven years as rector.

Mr Mair was first appointed as a teacher of Latin in 1976, just as the school was being re-established as an independent, co-educational school.

In his time he has served as head of rugby, head of Latin, housemaster, assistant rector and deputy rector, becoming rector in 2004.

In an address to pupils and parents at the school's annual prizegiving, Mr Mair reflected on his early years and highlighted the school's ethos and recent achievements.

He said: "I have been privileged to have a unique insight into the development of the High School at Anniesland since 1976.

"I believe this is a very special school community, created originally by the commitment and generosity of former pupils and parents.

"What we achieve we achieve through teamwork and the strength of our school community, staff, pupils, parents, former pupils and governors."

Mr Mair said the "real secret" was the school's positive ethos, with pupils engaged in a wide range of activities including sports, music, creative arts and public speaking.

One of the many messages he received came from the new England cricket coach, Trevor Bayliss, who coached at the school some 25 years ago.

Brian Adair, chair of the school's board of governors, praised Mr Mair's "dedicated and excellent" service and leadership.

He added: "The board is exceedingly grateful for everything he has contributed throughout his career."

Senior deputy rector John O'Neill has been appointed as the new rector of the school, which is Scotland's oldest dating back to 1124.
