SCOTLAND'S diving seabirds are being threatened by illegal nets, conservationists have claimed.

The RSPB said species such as the red-throated diver, which can stay under water for more than a minute-and-a-half at a time, were being caught and drowned in gill nets designed to catch fish.

There are thought to be only 1255 breeding pairs of the seabirds left in the UK, the vast majority of which are found in the Highlands and Islands.
