A PYLON constructed 2,500ft up a remote Scottish mountain for a controversial new power line is the highest in the UK.

The structure, which has been erected on the Corrieyairack Pass, is the electrical tower with the highest elevation in the UK, according to energy company SSE.

The pylon is part of the Beauly to Denny line, which will carry renewable energy generated in the Highlands to central Scotland.

The controversial project was given the go-ahead by Scottish Government ministers in January 2010, despite strong objections from countryside campaigners.

Construction of the bulk of the power line is being carried out by SSE, with ScottishPower building a 12-mile stretch from Denny northwards.
