A record-breaking 10,000 people have applied for just 467 jobs at Halfords.
The car accessory firm said the applications were for posts as fitters at its UK and Ireland stores.
It comes after official figures last week revealed the number of people out of work and receiving Jobseeker's Allowance fell to 142,600 in July – a drop of 800 from the previous month.
