l Born in Washington, County Durham, in 1945, he studied fine art at Newcastle University and became a teacher in Holland Park, London, and formed early bands The Banshees and The Gas Board.
l When studying fine art he was greatly influenced by artist and founder of British pop art Richard Hamilton.
l In 1970 he formed Roxy Music and their first hit was Virginia Plain in 1972. Ferry became famous for his sense of style as well as crooning voice, and was a hit with his female fans.
