Sir David Attenborough has urged the public to help experts establish why butterflies are becoming an increasingly rare sight in the UK.
Describing the bright insects as a "joy" of nature, the TV naturalist launched Butterfly Conservation's annual survey, Big Butterfly Count, yesterday.
The charity's president said: "Butterflies around the world are simply thrilling, but apart from that they are a very important indicator species of what's happening to our wildlife.
