TENNIS champion Andy Murray is engaged to long-time girlfriend, Kim Sears.

The sports star, 27, popped the question a week ago. The couple, who share a house in Surrey, have been together for eight years after meeting at a party in South Africa.

Representatives of Murray, who is currently in the Philippines, have confirmed the news.

The former Wimbledon champion tweeted yesterday asking for sightseeing tips as he headed to the Far East.

He wrote: "Off to the Philippines for the first time today, should be a fun trip... Anyone got some suggestions for first time tourists in Manila?"

Previous reumours of an engagement sparked speculation that the pair could tie the knot at Murray's recently refurbished hotel, the Cromlix, near his hometown of Dunblane.

The news came on the same day it emerged that Murray had sacked coaching assistant, Daniel Vallverdu, who has been with the Scot for five years. He also parted company with fitness trainer Jez Green, but has retained Amelie Mauresmo as his coach.

The engagement will lead to fevered speculation that the wedding will take place at Murray's hotel, the Cromlix, near his home town of Dunblane.

The venue was the place where his tennis player brother Jamie got married, before the former Wimbledon bought it and refurbished it at considerable cost.
