Armed police have called off a four hour siege in the hunt for an escaped former prisoner.

Officers went to the scene in Boyd Street in the Crosshill area of Glasgow after reports that Jonathan Kelly, an on the run ex-inmate at Low Moss prison, had been seen there.

Part of the area has been sealed off to the public after the incident began at around 1.20pm.

However, shortly after 5pm, Police Scotland said in a statement that the siege was now over and there had been no trace of Kelly.

Nobody was hurt during the incident and the area has now been cleared.

A force spokesman said:  "Officers immediately responded to the location and conducted a search to try and locate him whilst ensuring there was no danger posed to members of the public.

"Police Scotland can confirm the man is still missing and enquiries are continuing. Officers would like to extend their thanks to the local community and the public for their co-operation and support throughout this incident."

Kelly, 33, was released from Low Moss Prison last month, after his prison licence was revoked and he disappeared from Drumchapel. Appeals have been issued for anyone who spots him to contact police on 101, but it is stressed they should not approach him.
