AN Australian philanthropist and major benefactor of the Edinburgh International Festival (EIF) has called on ordinary citizens and businesses to help save the Scottish arts in the face of government cutbacks and global austerity.

Media magnate Harold Mitchell, who will speak at a cultural summit on the future of the arts which takes place in Edinburgh tomorrow and Tuesday, warned that private support from individuals and businesses will have to increase amid the strain on the public purse.
