DELIUS'S A Mass of Life, performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra led by Sir Andrew Davis, will open this year's Edinburgh International Festival (EIF) tonight as organisers announced an increase in ticket sales of about 8000 (8%) on last year.

Soprano Anna Christy will star in the premiere show at the Usher Hall, which has been designed to underpin the Festival's founding principle "to provide a platform for the flowering of the human spirit".

Around 3000 more performers have descended on the Scottish capital for the start of the EIF as the stage is set for the premiere show.
