The main gates at Glasgow Central station have been closed over the evening rush hour after an unidentified object fell on to the glass canopy outside.

The canopy is understood to have cracked and station staff are in the process of investigating the incident.

Commuters can still gain access to the station via the other side entrances.

A Network Rail spokesman said: "Something has struck the glass canopy out on Gordon Street and staff need to have a look to see what it is.

"The main gates have been shut over as a precaution while we do that. The station is still open and all other entrances are open, with all trains running as normal."
