An elderly man has died in a collision between his electric wheelchair and a bin lorry.

The accident happened in Sheriffmuir Road, Dunblane, at around 10am yesterday.

Emergency services were called to the collision but the 80-year-old man died at the scene, police said.

Officers are investigating the full circumstances of the death and Stirling Council is also holding an internal inquiry.

Robert Steenson, director of housing and environment at the council, said: "I can confirm that a council vehicle was involved in a fatal incident with a pedestrian in Sheriffmuir yesterday.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to the victim's family at this difficult time.

"We are working closely with colleagues at Police Scotland and the Health and Safety Executive to investigate this tragic incident. We will also carry out our own internal investigation."

A police spokeswoman said: "Police Scotland was called to attend a road traffic collision on Sheriffmuir Road on Wednesday, December 3, at around 10am, which involved a refuse truck and an 80-year-old man in an electric wheelchair.

"The Scottish Ambulance Service attended, but the man later passed away.

"Inquiries to establish the full circumstances are still ongoing and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal. Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact Police Scotland immediately on 101 or through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
