BOB Holman, the social activist who has fought poverty for more than 25 years, has said that an independent Scotland could bring about a more equal society.

The author, who gave up his career as a professor to live and work in Glasgow's impoverished Easterhouse, also said the Work and Pensions Secretary, Iain Duncan Smith, once seen as a champion of social justice issues, had lost his "sincerity" as part of David Cameron's coalition.
