SCOTLAND'S first marine energy park was launched yesterday, embracing the Pentland Firth and the waters around Orkney to heighten the international profile of the area as a world leader in marine energy.
The aim is to create a cluster of expertise in the park which will link research universities, researchers and commercial companies working in the sector.
Eleven developers have successfully bid for seabed leases and are working on plans to install wave and tidal energy devices in the waters, which together would have the capacity to meet the electricity needs of up to three-quarters of a million homes.
