Three Scottish galleries are in the running to win the £100,000 Art Fund Prize for museum of the year.

The Riverside Museum in Glasgow, the National Museum of Scotland and the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh are among 10 vying for the biggest prize for UK arts and culture institutions.

The National Galleries has been short-listed for its re-vamp of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, while the Riverside and the National Museum are short-listed for their successful new capital building and redevelopment projects.

The "museum of the year" will be announced at the British Museum in London on June 19 after the short-list of four is announced on May 14.

Lord Smith of Finsbury, chairman of the judges, said: "Whittling the achievements of Britain's museums over the past year down to a list of 10 was an unbelievably challenging task.

"The outstanding quality of the projects we finally settled on, however, perfectly encapsulates the vitality and dynamism of a part of our nation's cultural life that continues to innovate, push boundaries and engage the public, even in these straitened times."

Stephen Deuchar, director of the Art Fund, said: "The vitality of our cultural treasures nationwide is a hugely important resource, and the Art Fund is extremely proud to celebrate these museums' achievements."
