TENSION between the Holyrood and Westminster Governments erupted into open warfare yesterday as Coalition ministers attempted to ratchet up pressure on Alex Salmond to accept their offer of a binding independence referendum.

Prime Minister David Cameron's Cabinet colleagues last night began openly hinting they would call their own vote if the First Minister rejected their proposal, while the SNP attacked what they described as scaremongering.

As the row dominated politics on both sides of the Border, both Governments bitterly accused the other of endangering Scotland's economy.
