Scotrail have been fined nearly £400,000 for shortcomings in passenger services and told there is “room for improvement” in areas including ticket vending machines, bookings and on-train destination boards.
The penalty has been meted out by government agency Transport Scotland as part of the Service Quality Incentive Regime (Squire), which monitors everything from train cleanliness to station staff.
The rail operator, which runs more than 95% of Scotland’s train services, receives a financial bonus for above benchmark performance in 36 separate areas but can be fined for shortcomings under a franchise agreement with the Scottish Government.
