TWO strong earthquakes have struck north-western Iran, leaving at least 180 people dead and more than 1300 injured, officials say.
The US Geological Survey said the first quake, measuring 6.4 magnitude, struck 37 miles northeast of the city of Tabriz. A second quake, measuring 6.3, struck 30 miles northeast of Tabriz 11 minutes later.
Other reports said phone lines were down, making rescue efforts difficult, and officials warned the death toll could rise. Iran has suffered several devastating quakes in recent times, the last of which struck the city of Bam in 2003, killing more than 25,000 people.
